| Additional
information: |
There is plenty to do and see throughout the Costa Verde / Beiras region with local markets supplying everything from fresh fish, meat, dairy produce, pottery and livestock. Try your bartering skills!
A car is essential for your stay. Albergaria a Velha is our closest town (15 minutes drive away) with several good cafés en route. It has plenty of first class traditional restaurants at prices we can all afford; a two course meal for two people with wine; €14 (£10) approx., or try a small café and reduce the cost to around €10 (£7)!
Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal, boasts every modern amenity but still retains its old charm. Take a boat trip in a traditional brightly painted moliceiros (fishing boats). Or relax over an al -fresco meal watching the world go by before wandering through the myriad of narrow cobbled streets bustling with life throughout the day and long into the night. Costa Nova boasts miles of beautiful unspoilt golden sandy beaches with the North Atlantic Rollers waiting to be discovered.
Visit the 12th century city of Porto on the banks of the River Douro, a city proud of its status as the founder of the Portuguese nation. There is a strong English influence there with port wine being “created” by two Englishmen in the 17th Century who added brandy to preserve the local wine. Port. Visit the world famous port wine cellars for a tasting followed by a boat trip along the river Douro.
Later, return to Casa Sulo and prepare the food bought fresh that day. Take a dip in the pool, have a cold beer or a vinho do porto branco – fresco (white port, chilled) as a pre-dinner aperitif and afterwards chat long into the night surrounded by the stars (no light pollution), the odd owl hoot and the occasional grunt of a wild boar going about its business in one of the neighbouring fields.
If you enjoy “driving and finding” take the back roads over the mountains to Viseu; a walled and ancient city full of character, charm, hospitality and old fashioned service – we bought a pack of aspirin in the pharmacy. They gift wrapped it in tissue before handing it over - we still haven’t opened it!
There are too many experiences in the region to mention in detail. Space and time do not permit but it would be remiss not to mention the regional dish of leitão (roast suckling pig) served with green salad and a garafe of chilled white wine in a small local café; Visit the ancient and beautiful university city of Coimbra; Vouzela for the world famous pasteis – a flaky sweet pastry to die for; fishing for bream, trout and barbell on the rivers Vouga, Dão, or Paiva. Or just spend quality time by the pool unwinding while time drifts by. We are off the beaten track and safe.

activities: |
There are plenty of activities in the area including fishing, bird watching, walking, go-karting, tennis, discos, cycling, museums, cinema, local markets, horseriding and all water sports. If you really are out for adventure, we can organise a day or a week’s canoeing, climbing and walking with a local specialist activities company (all supervised). For golfers, the Montebelo Golf and Leisure Club at Viseu, is one of the best golf courses you can play (a handicap card is required). For the non-golfers why not make use of its extensive leisure and club facilities.
